Bell Helicopter Model 214B: ADBY6V Bearing Repair
Bell. Sikorsky. Agusta. Westland SPA. These are all helicopters that require bearing roller swaging tools, bearing cutting tools, as well as bearing install, removal and proof-load tools for bearing replacements on the aircraft’s airframe. The ADBY6V bearing has several crossover bearing numbers; 70305-22800-101, KSYB5-20CRXD3, and 206-033-509. While these high misalignment bearings are common, they require custom tools to complete their repairs and these tools can prove difficult to obtain. These bearings have a necked ball for increased misalignment capabilities, and both the race and the ball are heat-treated for strength and durability. Therefore, these spherical bearings require its tools to be much stronger and what you will find is that Smith Machine and Tool takes these unique bearing specifications into account when providing innovative solutions to our customers.
Custom bearing swaging, staking, cutting and proof-load tools for bearings like these are our specialty. To start any repair of a non-conforming bearing, a technician will need to use a bearing cutting tool prior to extraction. Because these bearings are found on the airframe itself, it would be more beneficial to utilize our portable cutting tools to complete repairs directly on the airframe and avoid subassembly logistical headaches. For ultimate convenience, our portable cutting tool can also be used by hand in tandem with a standard socket wrench, avoiding the need for a special spainer wrench. To combat the strength of heat-treated bearings, such as these, we manufacture our tools from O1 tool steel and they carry a 60-61 Rockwell hardness after we heat treat them. M42 steel is available upon request with a 66-67 Rockwell hardness. To ensure longevity, we have our tools coated in black oxide to prevent corrosion and tarnish and it also makes our tools easier to clean. Crosal-Plus coating is also available upon request. For the ADBY6V bearings and its crossovers we also make a 3-in-1 install, removal and proof-load tool to do just that: install, remove and proof-load test a newly swaged bearing. We also know that there are certain angles, features and obstacles that can force an MRO team to find creative solutions for such restrictions. In this case, we’ve engineered an innovative tool, our Slim Line portable roller swaging tool to fit those tighter clearance requirements or avoid anti-rotation tabs and lugs. For this line of tools we had the wheels manufactured as thin as possible, while maintaining the strength or integrity of the steel of the body that retains the wheels. We developed these tools through precision machining to manufacture a close tight tolerance tool as well as utilizing precision heat treating that results with no defects in a thin cross section of a tool steel body.
