Slim Line Tooling

Slim Line Tooling Solutions

The only viable method to swage bearings that involved anti-rotation tabs or close wall obstacles used to be through anvil swaging. Because of our intimate end-user knowledge and familiarity with this swaging method, we identified 3 clear, key vulnerabilities and developed a superior solution, our Smith Machine and Tool Slim-Line Tooling.

3 reasons Anvil Swaging is Inferior to Roller Swaging:

1. Proof Load Retention: Research on anvil swaging suggests this swaging method products a 50% less proof-load retention value. This means in assembly production there will be a lower break away torque value as the bearing as not been crushed during the swaging process. To achieve the higher proof-load value with anvil swaging, the bearing needs to be over-swaged, thus increasing the rotational torque value and increasing the likelihood the bearing will fail.
2. Force: Anvil swaging typically is performed with a 10–20-ton press with a calibrated pressure gauge where roller swaging is done on a heavy-duty drill press (or done portably) suggesting anvil swaging exerts 10-20 times the force. Applying less force to the bearing means the bearing is less likely to violate the rotational torque value for that assembly check.
3. Time: Lastly, anvil swaging is a more laborious process taking 1-2 minutes per swage while roller swaging takes 10 seconds or less per swage.

Introducing the Smith Machine and Tool Slim Line Tooling Collection
These reasons were what drove Smith Machine and Tool to invest in extensive R&D to develop our slim-line tooling line. This line are roller swaging tools that have the wheels manufactured as thin as possible without compromising the strength or integrity of the steel of the body that retains the wheels. We developed these tools through precision machining to manufacture a close tight tolerance tool as well as utilizing precision heat treating that results with no defects in a thin cross section of a tool steel body.

Our slim-line tools are a one-of-a-kind solution to these assembly challenges, with nothing similar available on the market. These custom tools can be manufactured to be used with a drill press or portably and has an impressive lead time of being shipped within 10-12 business days (with 1 day expedites available). Visit our channel and contact us today to discuss your project so we can provide the best tooling to complete your job.
